Eric Devries

My good friend and wonderfull guitarist Gene Williams is in Holland to record his long awaited solo cd. Together with producer Ankie Keultjes (The Watchman) and a little help from me we are holed up in Gemert, a pretty little place, in a studio overlooking, and smelling, the dutch meadows. He brought Jay Lesikar and Jesse Aycock along to play piano and pedal steel. The rest of the band will be Mark Lemmen (bass), Eric van de Lest (drums), Ankie (vocals) and me (guitar).
Besides making a cd we got three gigs to play, two of them we did last weekend! We started out sunday at the Folkwoods festival in Eindhoven. In front of an audience of 100 or so people we did our first ever public performance of Gene Williams and friends and it went great. Already there were people asking for cd’s and we had to tell them there wasn’t any. Yet!! Anyway, it’s been filmed and photographed and well documented.

Here’s a very small review I found on Folkforum website the day after:

Daarna kies ik voor Gene Williams. Deze Osage-indiaan is te zien in de film Searchin’ For The Heart Of The Heartland, die op zaterdag al in het Groovy Movie Picture House werd gedraaid en in het najaar op dvd verschijnt. Hij is bezig met het opnemen van een plaat, en heeft wat vrienden uit Amerika meegenomen,
maar ook van hier: Eric Devries en Ad van Meurs op gitaar, Eric van de Lest op drums en Ankie Keultjes zingt mee. De man zelf is een vriendelijke beer die uitstekend gitaar speelt, en zo klinkt zijn muziek ook:

After that I choose to see Gene Williams. This Osage indian is featured in the movie Searchin’ For the Heart of the Heartland, already shown saturday in the Groovy Movie Picture House, and which will appear on DVD later this year. He is recording a cd at the moment and he brought some friends from the States and some friends from here: Eric Devries and Ad van Meurs on guitar, Eric van de Lest on drums and Ankie Keultjes on vocals. The man himself is a friendly bear as well as an awesome guitarist and so is his music: hug-able (?) roots with traces of Neil Young.(by Miriam Adriaanse)

Without drummer Eric van de Lest we went to Nijmegen to play café Trianon at 17:00. Jesse Aycock opened for us with a beautiful set with own songs and proved his musical abilities once more in front of a small but captive audience. Gene proved to be in good vocal form once again! Next saturday there will be a gig at the Zebra festival in Gemert!
